Digital Coded Squelch: Similar to CTCSS in function but utilizes digital tones to control the same operations.
A coded (numeric) word is translated into sub-audio tones, continually repeated and superimposed on the transmitted signal. At the receiver a decoder recognises the original 'code-word' and opens the audio squelch.
